Our Founders

Guoping Feng, Ph.D
Guoping Feng is the Poitras Professor of Neuroscience and Associate Director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. Feng is also the Director of Model Systems and Neurobiology in the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Originally from Zhejiang Province in China, he received his PhD from SUNY Buffalo and postdoctoral training at Washington University at St. Louis. Before moving to MIT, he was a faculty member at Duke University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of numerous awards for his research accomplishments in neuroscience and brain disorder research.

Robert Desimone, Ph.D
Robert Desimone is director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the Doris and Don Berkey Professor of Neuroscience at MIT. Prior to joining the McGovern Institute in 2004, he was director of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Mental Health, the largest mental health research center in the world. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of numerous awards, including the Gerard Prize, the top award of the Society for Neuroscience.

Steven E. Hyman, M.D.
Steven E. Hyman is director of the Program for Brain Health at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor and Harald McPike Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology. From 2012 to 2024, he was director of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at Broad. Before that, Hyman served as provost of Harvard University from 2001 to 2011. He was also the director of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he emphasized investment in neuroscience and genetic technologies.

Emugen’s Journey Begins
Emugen is founded by Guoping Feng, Robert Desimone, and Steve Hyman and incorporated on Feb 18, 2021. Tyler Brown is added as first employee and COO.
June 2021
First Office in Cambridge!

Emugen moves to its first office location in Cambridge, MA, while renting lab space in Watertown, MA.
February 2023

On to a Bigger Space
Emugen moves to a bigger combined 5250 sq ft office and lab space in Woburn, MA.
April 2022

The Team Continues to Grow
On April 1, Emugen grows to 10 employees, solidifying
its core scientific team and accelerating its pipeline.
July 2025

Drumlin Farm Service Day
Emugen has its first service day at Drumlin Farm, a Mass Audobon farm in Lincoln that employs sustainable farming techniques and supports local food pantries.
